On Saturday, a group of former Broncos players will be invited to the league’s annual offseason workout in Washington, D.C. The game is being organized by The Players for America, the non-profit organization that is dedicated to fighting to raise awareness about the health-care reform and workforce-training issues facing the country today.

My whole job as a player, as a human being, is to raise awareness on issues like gun violence, sexual violence, and so many other issues, Smith said. This year it’s been very positive and I think people will come out and come back and support me.

It definitely has been exciting. I’ve never met the guy that’s been this long and has such success.

Smith has had a lot more support from the outside than his teammates.

It has been nice to have people like Sam, the guys that I went to, they help me out in some ways and make me feel better, said former Denver linebacker John Fox, who played quarterback with Manning with Smith in San Diego. It helps me feel part of the team and that’s just the way it is. There is a lot going for me right now and I’m just so grateful that it has been so good to be with him.

For the first time since his NFL career was hit and miss, Smith hasn’t played on the gridiron. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler, a member of the Pro Bowl and the league’s top player with a 9.2 grade-point average. The last time Smith played in the NFL before being drafted was at Miami in 2001, when he was a fourth-round pick out of South Florida.

I’ve played my whole career at least once, Smith said. I didn’t play a good year with the Dolphins. I’ve played in five games in four years. The whole thing was pretty crazy. At the end of the day, just to be part of this incredible team and having a bunch of guys come in here and support me really made this offseason.
