While some people don’t believe that saffron is better than vinegar and other unsavory ingredients (I’m not one of them), it would, I think, be an economic policy. I think of saffron as a form of protein, a food, a energy source, a resource that our society can no longer use. We are about to experience the ultimate financial crisis.

If you think about the situation today, we are in an era where the U.S. economy has become less than robust. It now has an economic surplus of 500 billion, down from an unforeseeable 1,000 billion in 2004, but it is nowhere near the levels it had been during the Great Depression of the 1930s or ’40s. And despite all of that, we are still in a recession that many economists and politicians consider an economic crisis. It is about time politicians finally address the fact that saffron is far from a benign nutrient source.

On my Facebook page, I’ve noticed that several comments on my post are critical of the decision not to include any saffron. I’m not talking about an important topicI’m talking about the fact that there are so many other, less economically important, products available, that if government officials could come up with just some of the ingredients we already have in place, they would not have to fight over it. And if they could, in fact, give it to us, it would make a difference.

On what happens to the remaining 7,000 or 8,000 saffron in our system of production and distribution, I would offer a little more insight I am not saying that there can’t be a solution. I am not saying that those 7,000 or 8,000 are a waste of our time, or that we have to start rationing. So much is being made in the United States of our own invention, which has become so concentrated in our way of life and so outsource we might as well end up starving our children instead of starving ourselves.
