MONTREAL – Three more days from the Oct. 4 election, Quebec’s Liberals will begin the legislative race, following the Oct. 7 deadline to pass legislation legalizing medical marijuana for pain.

The Liberal-led House passed both bills in a 44-24 vote on Thursday, with the NDP’s only other attempt delayed.

With the law’s signature and ratification, medical marijuana will begin opening doors on July 1. The bill would allow medical users to keep their pot, but would only allow them to buy in-store. It would also allow patients who don’t have marijuana to take the medicine, but would not take it to work at work.

Opponents said the new law does not provide enough flexibility to allow for the legalization of medical marijuana for adults, meaning any patients coming to Canada as adults would remain without the ability to smoke pot, but rather would be subject to a requirement to register.

The new law would set a minimum age for taking marijuana to be 26 for adult and would allow the company to offer up to seven weeks for patients to obtain their medical marijuana, but it remains unclear how many of those who were deemed no risk could be allowed to obtain it.
