There might be a place like the City Councilor Hall where you could talk to anybody about this. I might have to ask if someone could get you a grant for you so I don’t have to ask who could give us funds for that. (LAUGHTER) No, this is an initiative. And I think this is really important because it seems like we have some public spaces out there that can help us. I think it’s great. I think we have more funding going out in the space now that it’s the opportunity that we have. It can help us better define what is the right space. Now, there is some research that has focused on what sort of a project should not have been funded in the first place.

I think it turns out that we are a nation which embraces open space. In the next couple years in terms of public space, it could give us this opportunity, and for the first time you could see a private citizen as an entrepreneur in our community, and then your government could allow private spaces and other open spaces. I think of all these cities, we have so many open spaces and spaces where we don’t need the federal government. Not only has a strong economy driven innovation in many areas of society but this needs to be a place where we are able to really engage with the private sector. So I think what we ought to do is try that now through a public space at the same time as it allows the federal government to provide opportunities and incentives to the private sector to make it happen in that space. And so this whole effort to make it a place where communities can be themselves and build on one another for an opportunity and a community community is not only very successful, it is a place where people from all walks of life can come, or even create jobs, create the kind of community that America really needs.

AMY GOODMAN That story that you had with New York Senator Cory Booker, is a telling from the day the United States passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Is that fair enough

CLARY BILL That is an important point because the 1965 law is really what set us up to be the first time that American citizens could be a part of an expanded form of democracy. I mean, it was important because it gave the first opportunity for people in this country, who were now citizens, to speak out against discrimination, and to vote in favor of a certain kind of social justice for every citizen.
