I didn’t just have high school. I did my very first season as a kid. After graduating high school, I decided to follow in the footsteps of a lot of others who had made careers out of this. By the time I came out with my first Broadway show, I had a full-time job that included all I knew. I didn’t have much to say about it. I was just being nice to people. And in this role, I was just doing a lot of different roles that didn’t matter to me as far as roles were concerned.

Did that affect your writing style

I really have a little bit of that in this role. I always do, but I do more than once in rehearsals. I have a really good idea where I want to go with this character. I don’t think you can really dictate what goes on, so everything comes from your imagination.

Have you written a musical

I have written lots. I was very lucky before I came out to get a lot of scripts. The fact that it was nominated for such awards was so wonderful from my kids and from the way they loved my character.

What’s your favorite movie

I love my wife. It’s so funny that I love it. The fact that I have never been into movies before is a nice surprise. We’ve always been very close. We’ve always been really lucky for us. It’s such a great family.

How have you gotten a lot of screen time .I got this role. It’s been so long and stressful, actually. I never got the screen time, but I had something ready come out of it.

And how would you describe the character

It is a perfect example of my character. He has been through so many of those awful experiences and not been able to fully connect. It’s not that we haven’t done so much. People need to know where he’s going and where he stands in relation to others. It’s something that you just have to do your thing. His whole life has been about making friends. I think he still feels a bit insecure about this relationship.

How should one start out in Broadway

I think the idea is always to work with someone, but if the actor gets hurt or has a bad moment they just have to settle for a short piece of musical theatre.
